Yipeng Festival and Loy Krathong
The Lantern Festival and the Water Lantern Festival are two distinct festivals, but due to their similar dates, they are usually celebrated together in Chiang Mai.
Yipeng Festival is a Buddhist festival from the ancient Lanna Kingdom. It usually celebrate in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. People release sky lanterns (khomloy) to the sky to express their reverence for the Buddha, it also means release back luck.
Releasing sky lanterns signifies "letting go of the old and embracing the new," washing away worries and hardships.
Loy Krathong is a national holiday in Thailand. People floating loy krathong on the water to express gratitude towards the Buddha and the Goddness Ganga. The floating lanterns is to release worries and sins, bid farewell to the past and welcome a new beginning.
Floating water lanterns (loy krathong ), on the other hand, serve as a tribute to the river spirits for nurturing all living things.
These two festivals happen to coincide in the same date in Chiang Mai. During this period, it attracts tourists from all over the world to come and experience it.
